"Live, from New York, it's Saturday Night..." Since 1975, with those words, Saturday Night Live has launched the careers of many of today's major film stars. Now in its 33rd year, the format remains much the same. There's the team of regular players, a celebrity guest host and a big name musical act. Inevitably, if you ask anyone in the US they'll tell you that SNL isn't as funny as it used to be. However, they've been saying every year that since 1976 and they must be doing something right when you look at just who's come through those comedy ranks... In the late 80's, SNL enjoyed something of a revival and it was mostly down to two men, one of whom was Mike Myers. While his funny may have left him – The Love Guru? Why, Mike, why? – there were many years where anything Myers did could raise a laugh. If it wasn't enough to have brought Wayne's World to prominence, he then went and created Austin Powers, the first film of which might have a pretty good shot at funniest film ever made. Seriously, go and watch it again, it's brilliant. All of that and he voiced Shrek. Which at least started off a good idea...
