FEATURE: THE MIGHTY QUINN
As Homeland Security Agent Murphy, Brandon Quinn has brought his very
own brand of magic to Charmed's eighth season. Our friends at Charmed Magazine
finds out why, in the words of Bob Dylan (well, sort of) you'll not see
nothing like Brandon Quinn… By his own admission, Brandon Quinn is not a suit-and-tie kind of fellow - and if he didn't tell you that from his own lips, the jeans and sneakers strewn around his otherwise tidy set trailer would give him away. Yet here Quinn is, neatly groomed in his government-issue suit, perfect for his recurring role on Charmed as Homeland Security Agent Murphy, the man who figured out that the Halliwell sisters were still alive and witchin'. And, as laid-back as the 27-year-old actor is about most things, Quinn is as pleased as can be to be playing a character so unlike many of the past roles he's taken on, including one that was very close to his current home.
"I was in Brad Kern's pilot, Mermaids, this year," explains Quinn. "Most of the characters I play are fun and upbeat, and I played the goofy best friend to the lead [Geoff Stults] of the pilot, and I was the party man. And in the pilot, I had no job; I was a permanent bachelor. And when Brad told me about this character, he was, like, 'He's a Homeland Security agent, he's 180 degrees opposite from what you played in my pilot this year, but I really think you could do it.' And I was, like, 'Wow, thanks for trusting me with Agent Murphy.' But it's fun, man. That's what it's all about - exploring new characters and different sides to yourself. And it amazes me - like, you just put a little focus and a little time and effort, and you can really feel like you've transformed yourself sometimes. That's what I love about this job."
Quinn has a lot of things to love - his is, to be overtly clever, a charmed life, one filled with silver linings and surprises. With a promising career, a young wife and a daughter on the way, no wonder he smiles so much when he's talking about most things. His charm surely shows through in his role as Murphy, a young man in a conservative world who doesn't think quite so conservatively. That much is obvious by the fact that he takes on three witches to aid him on certain projects.
"He's this eager, young, new rookie who's definitely got stuff to prove and definitely believes that there's more to the case than just them dying," Quinn says. "And he ends up being right. Everyone else was, "They're dead, they're dead,' and I'm like, 'No, there's something fishy here.' And I'm really persistent. I mean, I put all my work in on this case, following them around, figuring out what's going on, this and that. And I think my job would definitely be on the line if I'm wrong."
Coming on board a well-oiled machine such as Charmed has suited Quinn just fine, and not just because the Mermaids pilot was a de facto audition of sorts for him - though that definitely helped. "I think that Brad saw something in me when we were shooting the pilot, and then felt confident enough that I could play this character. And we got along really great. I love Brad. He's a rare man in this town."
