Leap Castle, County Offally, Ireland

Leap Castle

History
Leap Castle, near the town of Birr in County Offaly, was built in the 14th century by the O'Carroll family. It is claimed that the castle was built on a Druidic site, which is one of the reasons it is so paranormally active.

There are many stories of torture, murder and death occurring in the castle, including the slaying of a priest in a room now known as the 'bloody chapel'. It is situated on what was once an O'Bannon stronghold, indeed a ring fort nearby is attributed that family. The castle eventually passed into the ownership of the Darby family who expanded on the central keep with significant extensions.

In order to pay for these extensions rents were raised and much of the land accompanying the castle was sold. Around 1900, workmen who were hired to clean out a windowless room discovered hundreds of human skeletons piled on top of each other. The castle was ransacked and burned in 1922, and has subsequently been restored over the years.

Phenomena
An evil force, known as 'It' is reputed to occupy the lower part of the castle. It is claimed to have an inhuman face accompanied by an overwhelming stench. The spirits of many men, thrown to death and left to starve in the castle's oubliettes, are said to remain, with their moans and cries being heard. Footsteps are often detected and people claim to be grabbed or touched by unseen hands, During the recent restoration of the building, the current owner had two freakish accidents which couldn't be explained and which delayed the work.

Investigation
Before the investigation begins, crew members report problems with their electrical equipment, strange sounds are heard and people are touched or brushed passed by unseen figures. Derek senses a woman, who changes form into a grotesque figure. The spirit does not seem friendly. In the Bloody Chapel, both a Priest and a couple who lost their lives in the room are picked up. During a séance in the chapel, and in the Gallery, strange lights and orbs are recorded. Yvette attempts a vigil on the balcony, but is overcome with emotion before it even begins. More light anomalies are picked up in the cellar and the Great Hall.
