As well as gracing our TV screens in a series of high
profile M&S campaigns, Twiggy had been a household
name in the UK for four decades.
Twiggy is thought by many to be the world’s first real
supermodel (although we know Janice Dickinson
has her own ideas!). She was catapulted to instant stardom as a
teenager when her unique look captured the world’s
imagination and made her a sixties icon. Born Lesley Hornby,
the nickname Twiggy came from her big-eyed, naturally
skinny look.
After a hugely influential modelling career Twiggy went
on to be a successful actress, winning two Golden Globe
awards for her part in Ken Russell’s musical, The
Boyfriend. She’s also a talented recording
artist having released several albums, from country pop
to Broadway musicals.
Twiggy launched a new career in the nineties as a TV
presenter and interviewer, with her own ITV series, Twiggy’s
People, which was quickly followed by Take
Time with Twiggy. More recently she co-produced
and starred in the critically acclaimed If Love
Were All, which was directed by her husband, actor
Leigh Lawson.
Twiggy is an ardent supporter of animal welfare through
numerous societies, is an anti fur campaigner, and is
known also for her support of breast cancer research groups.
She lives in London with her husband, and they have two
grown up children.
