Kinnitty Castle, County Offally, Ireland

Kinnitty Castle

History
This former ancient castle is now a luxury hotel. The first Castle at Kinnitty was destroyed in 1209 and was later rebuilt by the Normans in 1213. After rebuilding the castle, the Normans were driven out by the powerful Gaelic clan, the O'Carrolls of Ely.

In 1630, William O'Carroll built a new castle in close proximity to the old Abbey. This was confiscated in 1641 by the English forces as part of the plantation of Offaly, or "Kings County" as it was renamed.

In 1922, as with many stately homes in Ireland, the Castle was burned down by the Republican forces. It was rebuilt in 1928 and the Bernard family lived there until 1946 when it was sold to Lord Decies who in turn sold the Castle to The State in 1951. The State retained ownership until it was purchased by the Ryan family in 1994 and has since been transformed.

Phenomena
In the Banquet Hall the spirit of a monk, very tall and always dressed in black has been reported. He is apparently a kind spirit, who delights in some of the more joyous events that are held at the castle. In the Geraldine Bedroom, many people have told of feeling the presence of a child, who is often heard whimpering. Outside the building lies an array of Celtic stones, where orbs and strange lights have been recorded on camera.

Investigation
On entering the castle, Derek immediately senses the famous monk who is reputed to wander the building. He claims the monk travels throughout the castle and is a happy spirit. During a solo vigil in the Geraldine bedroom, Karl has problems with his camera, as a new battery in the device suddenly drains. He then feels there is someone in the room with him and he picks up some orbs on camera. As he leaves the room, his face is touched by something unseen and footsteps are heard. Derek and Richard, in the gymnasium, hear a very distinct noise coming from the window, at which point a shadowy figure is witnessed outside. While in the room, all questions asked appeared to be answered with a series of knocks and wraps.
