Ackles was born in Dallas and raised in Richardson, Texas. In 1997 he began his acting career playing Eric Brady on Days of Our Lives, a critically acclaimed turn for which he received three Daytime Emmy® Award nominations and won the Soap Opera Digest Award for Best Male Newcomer in 1998.
